English Phonics: Where to Start Based on Your Child's Age?

Hello, Mini Bilingual Friend!
Before becoming an educator, I was a child navigating between two languages, and now, as a specialist in phonetics and bilingual education, one of the biggest concerns I encounter from parents is about "when." When is the perfect time to introduce English phonics to their little ones?
I feel a very special connection to this question. The key isn't a date on the calendar, but rather following your child's natural curiosity. Today I want to share with you a simple guide, based on science and my heart as an educator, so you know how to support each stage.
On the one hand, we hear that children are like sponges, but on the other, we don't want to overwhelm them. The answer is simpler than it seems and is based on how the developing brain works!
The key is to follow your child's natural interests. It's not about formal lessons, but about games and shared moments. Here's how and when to introduce phonics naturally, backed by science and my own professional experience.

From 0 to 2 years: The world is a sound
At this stage, your baby's brain is programmed to absorb all the sounds around them. They're like a little linguist who can differentiate between all the sounds in the world—even those that adults no longer perceive!
What to do? Focus on whole words associated with real things. Use a lot of "motherese" or "baby talk" (that sing-song, exaggerated language we instinctively use). Say "apple" while giving them an apple, or "ball" while playing with a ball.
The Scientific Evidence: Studies show that babies pay more attention to voices with a high pitch and a marked rhythm. This melody of language helps prepare their brains for the new language. Phonetics as such isn't necessary yet; they are building their bank of words and sounds.

Ages 2 to 4: Let's play with sounds!
Now your little one is more active, curious, and loves to repeat. Their brain is ready to start connecting the dots between words and individual sounds. It's the perfect time for playful phonics!
What to do? Introduce basic sounds (phonemes) through games and routines. This age is the perfect time to start introducing phonics. For example, you can play with sounds like A - A - Apple, C - C - Cat, M - M - Mum, etc. You can also teach bilingually here, since the sounds in English and Spanish are very similar.
The Psychological Test: Play is the work of childhood. Through play, children learn without pressure and retain information longer. Cartoons that use rhymes and sounds (like "Peppa Pig" or "Bluey") are great here because they reinforce these concepts both aurally and visually.

From the age of 4: The golden age of phonetics
The moment has arrived! Around the age of four, children's brains take a big leap in their phonological awareness. That is, they begin to understand that words can be broken down into sounds and that these sounds can be represented by letters.
What to do? This is the best time for more structured phonics learning . You can use books with letters and sounds, fun flashcards, or educational apps that focus on how letters "sound" and how they blend to form words (this is called "blending": /c/ - /a/ - /t/ = "cat").
The Scientific Evidence: Research on early literacy confirms that explicit phonics instruction is most effective from this age onward. Children have the cognitive capacity to understand the symbol-sound relationship, which lays the foundation for reading and writing in English.
My final advice:
Remember, the goal isn't to create a prodigy, but a child who feels confident and motivated to communicate in English. If they don't enjoy an activity, leave it for another time. Patience and fun are your best tools.
You are your child's best guide on this wonderful journey through the world of sounds.
